This had me thinking about how our society might be different if more profound changes or difficulties that people were experiencing were somehow visible externally - would it make it easier for us to be empathetic to someone’s challenges and lived experiences?

This is the best question, Le! So much would be different…going to think about this a lot.

So moving! I don’t think I had ever stopped to think about the privacy of change vs. its more public counterpart—or the changes we can choose to hide, even from ourselves, vs. ones we can’t. It kind of floored me: this new lens through which to view so many big and small moments. How much do we even notice, about ourselves and others, until it becomes something so significant and demanding, like what you’ve described, that we can’t help but stop and give pause and see it? I will probably keep coming back to this question for a while. I’m so grateful to get to read about your experience and the thoughts that you’re now making visible…

Abs, this is such a thoughtful reply, I love it. I never thought about the changes we choose to hide from ourselves...that's one to chew on for sure...
